Looking back at the evolution of flight, which occurred over several centuries, it becomes clear that the most significant advances in aviation can be correlated to critical technological advancements, perhaps even to what might be called leaps or “quantum jumps” in those technologies. Military requirements also continue to challenge the state-of-the-art in aerospace technologies for improving the capabilities of occupied (piloted) and unoccupied aircraft, targeting, surveillance, offensive weapons delivery, and defensive systems. In addition, aeronautical engineering advancements have enabled larger and faster aircraft to carry more passengers and cargo or other payloads to longer distances. Nevertheless, getting to this point has required many innovative engineering solutions to overcome the challenges of building human-carrying vehicles suitable for efficient atmospheric flight.ĭriving the continued development of new airplanes is a demand for safer and more efficient designs for both military and civil use. Today, most people think nothing about getting on an airliner and flying at nearly the speed of sound for thousands of miles, perhaps even halfway around the planet in one flight. However, only in the last century has humankind turned the dream of flight into a practical reality.
